About Me

The story Behind

hI, i AM mARK gREENLAND

Many photographers strive to record the beauty, the wonders or the ugliness of the world around them. Their objective is to draw the attention of others to what they have noticed and perhaps reveal something hitherto unnoticed. For such photographers, the primary objective is to present the world as faithfully as technology allows.

I am not one of these photographers (though I respect them). My mind turns inwards, not outwards, and from childhood I was drawn to the imagined rather than the explained. It is always an effort for a dreamer to meet the expectations and demands of prosaic reality! Over the decades of my photographic odyssey, I have had to assimilate the rapidly evolving “left brain” aspects of taking a snap. I started in 1985 with a Pentax camera which had no light meter in it, and a single 50mm lens, and trusted in the pixies in labs somewhere to interpret my vision. My desire to make “art” was severely malnourished until I started the long and challenging journey that is Photoshop. Now, I am filled with gratitude to the inventors of photo editing – what a great boon to mankind!

So, now I can create places and things which don’t exist in the world around me until I make them. With my occasional successes comes a unique pleasure, well worth all the disappointments and failures. For me, a good image is one which presents something the viewer hasn’t seen before and which excites an emotional response; it makes the viewer pause and think. It’s even better if a narrative suggests itself.

People need to find joy in their lives, even if it’s the smallest of satisfactions. My joys (apart from family of course) are imagery, music and words. This site is dedicated to all three.

Thanks so much for your time
